Camogie in St. Declan’s NS
Donaghmore/Ashbourne Junior Camogie Winners 2014
Friday the 3rd of October was a special day in St. Declan’s N.S. It was GOAL Jersey Day. The children had special guests from the Donaghmore/Ashbourne Junior (Adult) Camogie team who have recently won the county final against Drumree. Our special guests brought in the cup and spoke to some of the classes about playing camogie both in school and joining the club. Eimear Keaveney, a former student of St. Declan’s spoke of how she started playing at ten years of age and how she has made great friends from joining the club and loves playing, Maggie Randle agreed. Children asked the players and members of management questions about the sport. Both players and management were delighted with the response they received and complimented the children for their enthusiasm and manners.
Last year, St Declan’s NS fielded a team in camogie for the first time in many years. This team reached the county semi-final, which was a marvelous achievement. We are hoping to build on this achievement and develop camogie as a sport in St. Declan’s. Camogie training has started in school for both Junior and Senior players. Ms.Quinlan and Ms.Cavanagh are training these teams. Junior players (3rd and 4th girls) will train on Tuesdays at lunch time, while senior players (5th and 6th girls) will train on Wednesdays at lunch time. These training times are subject to change. The school will provide hurleys and helmets if needed. If you have your own, please do bring them! All you need is a change of clothes, boots preferably. As it is coming into winter, some of the training will be done indoors. If that is the case, please bring runners instead of boots.
Camogie will celebrate 110 years in Ashbourne this year. It would be terrific if we could mark this, by developing the game in our school and furthermore in the parish. We would like to thank Eimear Keaveney, Maggie Randle, Nora Costello for taking the time to visit our school and talk to the children about camogie.
Thank you!
