Room 5 4th Class Ms Elliott Lava Lamp Experiment

1. We filled our water bottles up a quarter of the way.
2. We added vegetable oil into the bottle and we waited for a few minutes to see what happened. The oil separated from the water!
3. We added food dye into the bottle, and we watched the drops sink to the bottom. We found out that food dye is water-soluble.
4. We then dropped in half an Alka Seltzer into each bottle, this reacts with the water to make bubbles of carbon dioxide.
5. The bubbles attach themselves to the blobs of coloured water and bring them to the top of the glass.
6. When the bubbles pop the blobs of coloured water fall back to the bottom of the glass.
