GARDA PRIMARY SCHOOLS PROGRAMME

November 9, 2024

We were delighted to welcome Deirdre, Fearghall and Tigue from the local Community Gardaí into the school this week to deliver presentations as part of the Garda Primary Schools Programme.

They spoke to our 2nd class children about the role of the guard in the community. Some roles include crime detection and prevention, drug enforcement, road traffic enforcement and accident investigation, diplomatic and witness protection responsibilities. The children had lots of interesting questions for the guards present.

They spoke to the 3rd class children about the impact of their behaviour on others and how damaging small things can be. They spoke to children about different scenarios and what the right thing to do is and how often it can be difficult to do the right thing.

The 4th class talk was in relation to Internet Safety and Being Kind Online.  The Gardaí said that parents have a responsibility in keeping children safe online by having clear parental controls in place and closely monitoring any access that children have to devices (gaming, phones, tablets, computers etc.).  Web Wise has some very good resources for children and parents.

The 5th and 6th class presentation was in relation to cultural diversity and how our world has changed in relation to an increase in cultural diversity in particular in the past ten years. Mary spoke to the children about her Indian culture and the differences between the Indian and Irish culture. She spoke to the children about her experience of living in our community.

Thank you to Deirdre, Fearghall, Tigue and Mary for taking the time to come to visit us and for sharing their knowledge. We are very lucky to have an involved Community Guard service in Ashbourne.
