Visit from Minister Thomas Byrne
We were very lucky to receive a visit from the Minister of state for Sport and PE Thomas Byrne in St. Declan’s today. Ms Carey organised the visit as part of her role working with the children on the Student’s Council from 4th, 5th and 6th class. The minister received a very warm welcome from our Student’s Council and they had a meet and greet with him in our staffroom. The children asked lots of interesting questions. Thomas told the children he went to Trinity College where he trained to be a solicitor He always had an interest in politics from his college days. He enjoys meeting new people in his role as minister and helping people. He explained to the children how the Irish voting system worked and a bit about his constituency. He advised the children never to give up on things and if they don’t succeed the first to try a different route.
We then went to the hall where the Student’s Council presented a power point on the history of St. Declan’s NS. The minister addressed our three sixth classes and our Student’s Council and then he got a tour of our school.
On behalf of St. Declan’s NS we would like to thank Minister Byrne for taking the time out of his very busy schedule to come to our school and meet us. Thank you to Ms Carey for coordinating the event. Who knows what future ministers we have in our school destined for the Dáil !!!
