Seachtain Na Gaeilge 2023

March 18, 2023

We had a fantastic week  in St. Declan’s for Seachtain Na Gaeilge. All classes decorated notice boards, created art and were practising Irish poems, songs and phrases for the week.

On Tuesday the 14th of March our talented teachers took to the stage for a ceolchoirm for all the children. We had Mr Quinn on accordion, Mr Kearins on flute, Mr Mc Keown on guitar and banjo, Michelle from Music Generation on the violin and Ms Jenkinson on the bodhran. We had a selection of children from Ms Jenkinson’s Irish Dancing class also took to the stage for some Irish Dancing. 3rd, 4th and 5th classes performed some tunes for us on the violin led by their music teacher Michelle from Music Generation. We are so lucky to have such a talented bunch of teachers in our school. The children really enjoyed the performances. 5th and 6th classes had a Trá na gCeist in the hall. All classes performed a song/dance/poem in the hall in Irish. The children in 3rd and 4th classes had a “SIOPA” and had to buy their items by speaking to the shopkeeper in Irish. It was great fun.

We had Lá Glas on the 16th of March. A big thank you to all the parents and children who went to such a huge effort with costumes, face paints, wigs and accessories. The children looked fantastic and there was a super atmosphere in the school all day long. We had a parade as part of our celebrations. Classes 2nd to 6th lined the parade while Junior Infants, Senior Infants and first classes got to walk through the parade. Larry the Leprechaun led the way. It was great fun and the children really enjoyed it.

We finished off the week with a display of Irish dancing from Ms Jenkinson’s school of Irish dancing. The children were amazing. We had a taste of Riverdance in our yard.

Thank you to Ms Mooney for organising Seachtain Na Gaeilge. It was a brilliant week enjoyed by all.
