MATHS WEEK IN ST. DECLAN’S
Each year to promote Maths in our school we hold a Maths Week. During this week the children are encouraged to recognise Maths in their daily lives and play games that involve mathematical concepts.
Maths week in St Declan’s is on from Monday the 15th to Friday th 19th of October.
The Bee bots and ipads are brought into all the junior classes to promote the language of maths and further to develop directional skills. To develop this further 1st and 2nd classes become Bee bots themselves by giving oral directions to their peers.
The Learning Support team run a workshop for Junior and Senior Infants in the PE hall They concentrate on sorting, matching, classifying, balancing, ordering, sequencing……etc.
All the classes complete Maths trails around the school. They use their Maths eyes to find shapes, numbers, colours….etc in the environment. They use cameras and ipads to record their findings.
The three 6th classes are participating in coder dojo workshops. The CoderDojo movement believes that an understanding of programming languages is increasingly important in the modern world, that it’s both better and easier to learn these skills early, and that nobody should be denied the opportunity to do so. Coder dojo has built a global network of free, volunteer-led, community-based programming clubs for young people. Anyone aged seven to seventeen can visit a Dojo where they can learn to code, build a website, create an app or a game, and explore technology in an informal, creative, and social environment.
All classes do a Maths noticeboard to display work they had done in class.
On Tuesday the 16th of October the three first classes are going to Imagonisty in Dundrum for a maths workshops.
On Wednesday the 17th of October all the fifth classes are going to DIT on Kevin Street to a Murderous Maths presentation by Kjartan Poskitt. Kjartan is the author of the Murderous Maths series of books. The presentation invollves the performance of the type of mathematics covered in the books. The demonstration is interactive and the children also get to participate in a series of mathematical workshops.
We will post activities of all activities during the week.
