Fifth Class visit the Library
On Thursday the 1st of October 2015 both Mrs Reilly and Ms. Jenkinsons fifth classes walked down to Ashbourne Library, accompanied by Ms O’ Halloran. Ashbourne Library has organised various activities for Book week. Fifth Class were invited to attend a presentation from Irish author, Nicola Pierce which started at 9.45am. Nicola is originally from Tallaght but is currently living in Drogheda. Nicola was promoting her third book “Behind the Walls”.
When the children arrived they were greeted by the librarian and were instructed to position themselves in rows, where Ms Pierce was visible to all. Once everyone had settled down Ms Pierce introduced herself and commenced her presentation discussing previous books she had written. She gave a short synopsis of her first book “The Spirit Of the Titanic”. She explained how she researched and wrote this book! It was very interesting
Following this she proceeded to explain about her second book “The City of Faith”. This really grabbed the children’s attention. This book is about the Battle of Stalingrad during world war 2. She explained that this was an important event during the war as it was the first time the Germans had been defeated in battle.
After this she introduced her new book “Behind the Walls”. she gave a detailed description of how she came up with the idea for this book, which is based in the city of Derry during the Siege of Derry hundreds of years ago. We saw various pictures of the city of Derry. She also read a excerpt from this book.
Nicola Pierce informed us that she is currently working on her fourth book which is based on the Battle of the Boyne. She hopes to have this published and on the bookshelves by next year.
Before she concluded her presentation she allowed the children to ask her questions about her research, writing and publishing. This was a very enjoyable morning
