Distance learning update in St Declan’s NS

April 3, 2020

First of all, on behalf of all our staff I would like to thank you all for your cooperation and understanding during what are very difficult circumstances for everyone.

Many of you will be facing a range of challenges and we hope that it has been made very clear to parents that we know every family will be in a different position in relation to learning at home. For some of you, engaging in learning tasks at home will be very challenging for a range of reasons and we as a school acknowledge this.

We recommend that children are encouraged to engage in reading activities as there is a huge benefit to this.

Some social maths such as counting, adding, subtracting, telling the time, money etc. would be very helpful and exercise is also really important. For some families, especially those where parents are working on the frontline, or working from home etc. this will be all that you can manage at the moment and our message is that is OK and completely acceptable given the circumstances. We want to reassure you that your child won’t hugely miss out if they don’t engage in any further learning activities we set. Of course they will benefit, but no child will be hugely disadvantaged either. Like many primary schools, it is something that we hadn’t set up and this presents challenges to both staff and parents.

We have decided that if the schools remain closed after Easter that we will use the app for distance learning called Seesaw.

Seesaw is an app that allows teachers to assign learning activities to children. It also allows children the opportunity to share their learning with their teacher for feedback and acknowledgement. We think this will be very helpful to families who are engaged in distance learning. All parents will receive an email over the next few days with a unique link to download the app and sign in details.

If you require support we have set up a dedicated email address to provide support and guidance for parents. Please feel free to email seesaw@decsash.ie and a member of staff will be in touch
with you as soon as possible. Thank you
